Choice of camera

I need some opinions here so please leave me a comment or email me directly....

In a couple weeks I am going on the Girlfriends Cruise. We will leave from San Diego and stop at Catalina Island and Ensenada. Here's what I am struggling with.... I can't decide which camera to take. I know, I know, sounds kind of silly, but for a photographer it's a big decision.

Here are my choices.... my point and shoot that fits in my purse (and possibly my pocket), or my digital SLR that takes much better photos. They both have their pros and cons. Do I want simplicity or do I want great photos?

Let me know what you think... Thanks so much!!

Take both. Even though it will be a pain to pack your big camera, you will be mad if you come across an opportunity to use it and don't have it. (Happened to me once). It's always nice to have a back up too, just in case something might happen to one of them. Have a great time!

Take both of them, but limit your lenses so you can take a smallish camera bag. I think you will use your p&s the most.... It's easier to hand it to strangers for cheesy group pics too! (I am jealous, fyi!)

I say take them both too! I have done this before for going out in the evening I like my small camera and for day shots my nicer camera.

Take the point and shoot, less to haul aroud and worry about and you don't want to behind the camera the whole time, right?

I say both also. I can't ever decide and I'm scared to not take both. Even if you don't use it then you have it if you need it. But I would suggest getting insurance on it. It's cheap and so worth it!!

If it were me, I would just take the point and shoot to document the people on the cruise, and have fun, after all it is a vacation? I never take my $$ cameras on vacation. Then I feel like I am working. The only reason I would take the big camera is if you are wanting to do some nice landscape shots, but if you aren't into landscapes, then I say just leave it home where it is safe.

I would only take the P&S, but I'm not a photog! I have one of each, but I don't think I would take the bigger bulky one. Yes the photo quality and capabilities are far greater, but not worth the trouble. If you pack the "big gun" in your suitcase and don't carry it with you all the time, what are the chances that when you do carry it, it will be the right time, and when you don't you won't miss an opp. Plus, if you leave it in your cabin, you run the risk of theft. Insurance may cover the camera, but not the memories stored inside.
Take the P&S and carry it with you!

Just my two cents!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! I do have my stuff insured so that's not an issue. I just don't know how much I want to haul around my dSLR. Will have to think on this one....

I agree, take both. There will be chances to use them both during the trip.

I'd take the point & shoot; you have so little time and the less you have to deal with, the better. Relax and enjoy your "girl" time!

I agree with Amber take both. It will be worth lugging it around when you have all of those beautiful pictures to remember the trip by. Use your camera bag as a purse, then you are only carry one thing.
Enjoy.

I would take the point & shoot and just enjoy your vacation. You will still take great photos!
